All parents want their children to enter school equipped with the skills that are on par if not with an edge over the rest. Often the focus is on cognitive skills, early literacy, or early math skills but are they the best predictors of academic and life success?
Learning is a social and interactive process. Effective learning cannot take place if a child has problem coping socially or emotionally. Indeed, emotional and social skills such as anger management, conflict resolution, empathy, impulse control are such critical life skills that it should not be left for children to learn by chance. Clearly, academic intelligence offers virtually no assurance that our children are prepared for all of life’s challenges, let alone guarantee success. EQ is often the crucial element in determining whether one would go on to thrive in life.
